Young Philanthropists Partner with Local Researchers to Tackle Alzheimer’s
More than 200 volunteers are raising awareness and funds to support cutting-edge science
DALLAS, TX. (July 1, 2016): BvB Dallas players and coaches have set an ambitious goal to raise $500,000 in less than three months to support research advancements for Alzheimer’s in Dallas, TX that could impact millions of lives around the globe. Since its inception, BvB Dallas has raised $2.3 million to fund Alzheimer’s research and raise awareness in North Texas about the disease.
“We are a generation who is seeing the impact of loved ones fighting Alzheimer’s on a daily basis,” said BvB Dallas co-president Rachel Anderson. “No longer is this a disease that just impacts our grandparents, it impacts our parents and friends, too. We know that we must do something to make a difference and funding cutting-edge research is the best way we can do that.”
The money raised this summer will support pioneering institutions focused on Alzheimer’s research. Through a competitive process held in the Spring, the following organizations have been selected as the 2016 beneficiaries:
UT Southwestern will provide training for a neuropsychology postdoctoral fellowship, to be named after BvB Dallas, in research and patient treatment related to Alzheimer’s disease.
Baylor will be conducting research with the goal of developing a blood or urine screen to detect Alzheimer’s vulnerability years before symptoms occur.
Findings from the Center for BrainHealth’s 2014 study, funded, in part, by BvB Dallas, suggest that strategy-based brain training may improve cognitive function for those with mild cognitive impairment, a state that often precedes Alzheimer’s disease. BvB is now supporting Phase 2, which adds neuro-stimulation and brain imaging to the study protocol.
Throughout the summer, BvB Dallas players and coaches will educate the community on-and-off the field about the innovative research that’s taking place in Dallas. Fundraising efforts culminate Saturday, August 13, 2016, when they take the field at the Cotton Bowl in Fair Park to TACKLE ALZHEIMER’STM in the 9th Annual BvB Dallas Powder-Puff Football Game. More than 35 powder-puff games are played around the country. BvB Dallas is the largest both in terms of number of participants and dollars raised to support research and awareness.
